Bicycles on San Diego City Buses

Please e-mail comments, corrections and additions to the webmaster at pje@efgh.com.

You can now take your bicycle with you whenever you travel on San Diego city buses (and on many other city buses in San Diego County).

On the front of every bus is a rack that can hold one or two bicycles.

There is no additional fare for your bicycle. No permit is required. There are no restrictions on hours. Just put your bicycle on the rack, board the bus and pay the regular fare (or use your bus pass).

If the bicycle rack is full, you must wait for the next bus.

The bicycle racks are easy to use. However, until you get used to the racks, you may want to board at the beginning of the line so you'll have plenty of time to load your bicycle.

  1. Remove all loose items, such as water bottles and pumps, from your bicycle.
  2. If there is no bicycle on the rack, pull the rack down and lock it into place.
  3. Put your bicycle on the rack with the front toward the curb. If the rack is empty, put your bicycle in the position closest to the front of the bus.
  4. Move a lever over the front wheel of your bicycle. It is spring-loaded and will hold the front wheel.
  5. When you reach your destination, tell the driver you are going to remove your bicycle.
  6. Unload your bicycle by reversing all the steps used to load it.
