County Highway S2 begins at a junction with California Highway 98 near Ocotillo in Imperial County and runs north (and also west) approximately 65 miles to a junction with California Highway 79 near Warner Springs in San Diego County.

The part of County Highway S2 in Imperial County is called Imperial Highway.

The part of County Highway S2 in San Diego County goes by three names:

• The southernmost 9.8 miles is called Sweeney Pass Road.
• The rest of the part south of Highway 78 is called the Great Southern Overland Stage Route of 1849.
• The part north of Highway 78 is called San Felipe Road.
